What actually happens to fat after ultrasonic cavitation
The session breaks the fat cells open. Carrying the contents out is a job your body finishes after you leave the room.

The sound waves do the easy part
Ultrasonic cavitation works by aiming low frequency sound waves at a treatment area. Those waves create pressure changes in the tissue, and the pressure changes form tiny bubbles in the fluid around the fat cells. The bubbles expand and then collapse, and when one collapses against a fat cell membrane, the membrane gives way. That is the whole first act. The machine's job ends there.
What people miss is that a ruptured fat cell is not a fat cell that has left the body. The fatty acids and glycerol that were stored inside it are now sitting loose in the tissue around where the cell used to be intact. Nothing has been removed yet. It has only been released.
Where the fat actually goes
The body clears released fat the same way it clears other waste from tissue: through the lymphatic system. Lymph fluid picks up the fatty acids and glycerol and carries them through a network of vessels and lymph nodes toward the bloodstream, and from there the liver processes what arrives, using some of it for energy and filtering out the rest. This is why a cavitation session does not produce a visible change while you are still on the table. The fat has been broken down, but it has not been carried away. That part takes the body several days.
The week after the session is doing real work
Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no central pump. It relies on muscle movement and hydration to keep fluid moving at all. That is the practical reason the days right after a session matter as much as the session itself. A body that is dehydrated or sitting still clears released fat more slowly than one that is drinking water and moving normally.
- Drink water through the day, more than feels necessary
- Walk, even briefly, rather than staying still for long stretches
- Go easy on alcohol for a day or two, since the liver is already busy processing what the session released
- Keep any follow-up booked alongside the session, since manual work on the same pathway, wood therapy or lymphatic drainage, moves fluid that would otherwise sit
Why the practice pairs cavitation with other treatments in the same session
At Summa Med Spa, Body Contouring is booked as a two hour session that layers ultrasonic cavitation with radiofrequency skin tightening and wood therapy, with a red light add-on for anyone who wants extra support for the skin. The combination exists because cavitation addresses the fat cells, radiofrequency works on the skin above them, and wood therapy, a manual sculpting massage, supports circulation and helps smooth the area while the rest of it clears. None of the three is a substitute for the others. They are working on different layers of the same area at the same time, in the same two hour block, rather than asking you to come back separately for each one.
What the consultation is actually for
Before any of this starts, the first visit is a consultation, not a treatment. That is where the areas you actually want addressed get identified, where realistic expectations for your own body and tissue get discussed honestly, and where a plan gets built around how many sessions makes sense rather than guessing. It is a better use of that first appointment than jumping straight to the table, and it is why the practice structures a first visit that way.
One session is a data point, not the whole picture
Because the amount released in a single visit is modest, and because clearance depends on your own lymphatic system doing its work over the following days, one session will not show you the full effect of the treatment. Visible change tends to build across a series, spaced out so the body has time to clear each session before the next. Working out how many sessions makes sense for the area you want addressed is exactly the kind of question worth bringing to that consultation with Yolanda, since it depends on the area, how much tissue is involved, and how your body responds to the first session or two.
What ultrasonic cavitation is not
It is worth being plain about this. Cavitation is not a weight loss treatment and it is not a substitute for the basics of diet and movement your body already uses to manage fat generally. It targets specific stubborn areas rather than overall body weight, and how much visible difference any individual sees will vary. If you are wondering whether it fits what you are actually trying to change, that is a question for a consultation rather than something to settle from an article.
